Alan Blizzard Award 2009
Experts from uOttawa and other local institutions take home Alan Blizzard Award for collaborative excellence in university teaching
OTTAWA, April 9, 2009 — A group composed of University of Ottawa professors and other experts from the Ottawa region has won the prestigious Alan Blizzard Award. Launched in 2000, the prize is designed to encourage and honour those whose exemplary teamwork in university teaching has helped improve the effectiveness of student learning.
This year’s winners designed an online learning module involving 12 hours of course time over two weeks. The module introduces students to the plight of a terminally ill patient named Neil, through his own narrative. Students have to pool their efforts and judgement to identify all of the factors contributing to Neil’s “total pain” and to design an interprofessional care plan.
The module developers are:
Pippa Hall, associate professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa;
Susan Brajtman, associate professor, School of Nursing, University of Ottawa;
Peter Barnes, assistant professor, Faculty of Human Sciences, Saint Paul University;
Timothy Willett, manager, Curriculum Development and Research Initiatives, CRI Critical Care Education Network;
Lynda Weaver, coordinator, Palliative Care Education and Quality Management, Bruyère Continuing Care;
Daniel Mroz, assistant professor, Department of Theatre, University of Ottawa;
Brad Genereaux, programming consultant, University of Ottawa;
Patti O’Brien, chief information officer, CRI Critical Care Education Network; and
Beckie Walbourne, program manager, Palliative Care Research, Bruyère Continuing Care.
Congratulations to everyone involved in this achievement!
